Converting a time

Set the date and time, then type the city or zone that time belongs to in In. Every place in the list below updates at once, with its own date, its zone abbreviation where one is in common use, its UTC offset and how far it is ahead of or behind the original. Now fills in the current time where you are. The round-arrow button on a row converts from that place instead.

Because the date is part of the conversion, an event in March or October is shown with the clocks as they will be on that day, not as they are today.

Skipped and repeated times

When clocks spring forward, a stretch of local time never happens: in New York there is no 02:30 on the second Sunday of March. The converter says so and moves the time forward by the length of the jump. When clocks fall back, an hour happens twice; you are asked which of the two you mean, and the rows follow your choice.

Questions

Why does a short name like IST or CST mean different places?

Abbreviations are not unique: IST is used for India, Ireland and Israel, and CST for both the central United States and China. Pick a city instead and the converter uses that place's exact rules.

Is the result right for dates far in the future?

It applies the rules your browser knows today. If a country changes its clocks later, the result changes when your browser updates its time zone data.

Can I convert to UTC?

Yes. Type UTC in the search box to add Coordinated Universal Time as a row, or to convert from it.
